IAM or Initial Address Message is the first message sent in a call set-up by a Switch or Exchange to other partner exchange. IAM seizes / reserves a circuit between the exchanges for the call and contains the information of numbers dialed by the calling party.

Other important information contained in an IAM message includes

• Originating Point Code OPC

• Destination Point Code DPC

• Circuit Identification Code CIC

• Calling party number

• Transmission medium requirement (echo suppresser status etc).
