Voice over IP (also called VoIP, IP Telephony, and Internet telephony is ability to convert voice or fax calls into data packets for transmission over the Internet or other IP-based networks.

it is a category of hardware and software that enables people to use the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls. Voice data is sent in packets using rather than by traditional POTS circuits.. One big advantage of VoIP is toll bypass--that is, avoiding the tolls charged for ordinary telephone service
