The SMS protocol stack consists of four layers

Application Layer
It is implemented in the SMEs in the form of software applications that send, receive and interpret the content of the messages. It is also known as SM-AL or Short Message Application Layer


Transfer Layer
At the transfer layer that message is considered as a sequence of octets containing information on message length message originator etc

It is also know as SM-TL or Short Message Transport Layer

Relay Layer
The Relay Layer allows the transport of message between various network elements

Link Layer
The link Layer allows the transmission of the message at the physical level for this purpose the message is protected to deal with low level channel error it is known a SM-LL
