SMS Delivery and Sending in GSM System

If the network wants to deliver a short message (SMS)  or a mobile terminated (MT) call to registered mobile user, it 1st needs to page the handset on PCH. Paging Messages need to be sent in every cell pertaining to the location area last stored on the network. If the intended user’s handset receives the message, it will try to access the system on its RACH, indicating ‘paging response’ as establishment cause.

If a Mobile user initiates a call or wants to send a short message (SMS), the paging procedure is omitted, and the establishment cause indicated on the RACH is different.More information on the control channels is available in our GSM section.
