Introduction to SMS

Developed as part of the GSM technical specifications the short messaging service (SMS) allows mobile stations and network connected devices to exchange short text messages.
GSM networks allow text messages of up to 160 characters to be sent and received via the network operator's message center to your mobile phone The text can comprise words or numbers or an alphanumeric combination

Since its initial introduction to GSM systems, SMS has now been ported to other network technologies like GPRS and CDMA.
SMS messages can be sent from any GSM mobile devices but also from a variety of other devices like Internet hosts and telex.
Best thing about SMS is that it is supported by 100% of GSM handsets ad by most of the GSM networks world wide.

SMS was commercially introduced in the telecom market in 1992 but it was only in late 1990s that the service became widely accepted by mass market .In 2001 an estimated 102.9 billion text messages were exchanged world wide
